In light of the recent Israeli attacks targeting the people of Gaza there’s been a rise in public interest with regard to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The HRJ Palestine Collective believes that it is important to be aware of the facts surrounding this tragic situation at hand. Please note and circulate this information widely. The illegal and brutal Israeli occupation of Palestine and its inhumane blockade of Gaza (a form of collective punishment as it targets the civilian population of Gaza which is illegal under international law according to Amnesty International) must be stopped!

1. Gaza has been illegally occupied since 1967 (based on UN Resolution 242, the reoccurring UN GA resolution: “Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine“, the ICJ July 2004 decision and the consistent position of the human rights organizations and the overwhelming majority of the international community/countries)

2. An occupied people have the legal right of “fighting against” an “alien occupation… in the exercise of their right of self-determination” based on the 1977 Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions.

3. According to B’Tselem (the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories), in 2012 (January to September) 56 Palestinian civilians in Gaza have been killed by the Israeli Security Forces while 0 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians (“Fatalities After Operation Cast Lead).

4. Based on the US Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 “…no security assistance may be provided to any country the government of which engages in a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized human rights.” (Israel’s wretched human rights record becomes evident by looking at any mainstream human rights organization, such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and even B’Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization). At the moment the US government gives 3 billion dollars in military aid to the state of Israel on an annual basis.
